Why we aren't using AI art for Soul Survivor

Salutations Survivors,
We’ve been super excited to show off the latest art for Soul Survivor!
However, we recently received a question that both surprised and didn’t surprise us at all (it being 2025 and whatnot).
“Is this AI art?”
Well, the truth is…

HECK NO!
If you’ve seen our previous newsletters, you probably know that we received hundreds of applications from artists and interviewed many of them until we enthusiastically hired Nikita Magnitskiy to take our game to the next level!
But some may think AI is faster and cheaper so as a small company on a budget why not go that route?
The Problems With AI Art
1. Lack of Soul
Take a look below at this piece that an artist spent a whole day drawing that shows him creating art side by side with his daughter.
Another user really thought they were proving something by creating their own version with AI in five minutes.

Not only are the issues with the AI version kind of disturbing but it also lacks the emotion and storytelling behind the original drawing.

The carefree joy on the daughter’s face expresses the innocence of being able to let loose and just draw for fun and this contrasts well with the father’s drained eyes as someone who now has to draw for work.
These emotions contribute to a deeper meaning than just a simple image of a father drawing with his child; which the AI version doesn’t communicate.
2. Art Theft
If you’re not already aware, the only reason AI art is advanced as it is today is because countless human artists have had their work stolen and used to train AI data sets without their consent.
So in general, it’s best for us to limit the use of AI Art.
Using it for personal use is one thing, but using it for commercial purposes when it has roots in art theft is essentially profiting off that theft.
3. Copyright
Another reason using AI art for commercial purposes is dicey is because the law is still ever-changing when it comes to how and how much AI works can be copyrighted.
Working with human artists under a solid contract makes copyright law more straightforward and that piece of mind is worth the price tag.
4. Art is Human
Finally, even if none of the above was true, the definition of art is:
the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
No matter how beautiful a piece is, there’s a reason why the human artist and their story is often what makes the difference between selling a $5 piece of art and a $5,000 piece of art.
That’s why AI art is so cheap. It’s the human behind the work that makes a piece valuable.

Speaking of which, take a look at Nikita’s interpretation of Soul Survivor’s Lich & Satyr species.
